I'm a folksinger of both adult and children's songs! I've
always thought of folk songs as music that told stories, in words and music, or
simply in the melodies. Folk music in particular seems to act as a form of
compressed literature. Some songs take me back down the road; some help me
keep movin' on. In fact, songs put a light to the pathway of our journey.
Time to be headin' out. Come on along!
It has been
said, “Jim Anger is an important part of the Wisconsin folk music scene.”
(Dan Geddes, Past-president, Green Apple Folk Music Society). Some of Jim’s
songs have been aired on the Wisconsin Public Radio program, “Simply Folk,”
and his songs have been published in the national folk music magazine, Sing
Out,” and “Pass It On,” the journal of the Children’s Music Network.
Jim could be called a singer-guitarist-songwriter, but if he
has a specialty, it is performing for and with kids. He performs a wide
range of music—everything from folk songs and his own originals to country
songs, the Christmas holiday standards, 50’s and 60’s tunes, and light
rock. But in a group of performers, Jim is likely to be the one doing songs
such as “Frog Went A-Courtin,’” “She’ll Be Comin’ ‘Round the Mountain,” the
Utah Phillips song, “Daddy, What’s A Train?” or the Woody Guthrie classic,
“This Land Is Your Land.”
As a songwriter, Jim has written more than 100 songs, several
about one of his favorite subjects, trains! While his musical interests are
broad, he loves folk music the best---for the stories the songs can tell.
He has been a member of two bands, Life’s Full Circle and
Whistle Junction. At times Jim teams with his brother Mike in The Anger
Brothers, but mostly he sings solo. He has performed in schools, library
programs, scout meetings, The Wolf River Theater, (New London, WI), with his
brother Mike at The White Crow (Saginaw, MI), 8th Street
Coffeehouse, (Escanaba, MI), and Appleton and Shawano, WI coffeehouses.
For many
years, Jim has been a member of the Green Apple Folk Music Society
(Appleton), and has been on stage at many Green Apple programs. Jim has, on
occasion, hosted the Open Mic portions of the Shawano Folk Music Festival,
and has performed at the festival, as well. For the past several years, Jim
has been the sole musician for the “From the Land” folk art fair in Green
Lake, WI, with a standing invitation to return every year!
